Underground transformer explosion knocks out downtown power

11:15 Update: Fire Dept. handing over scene to EPB crews to make repairs overnight. Here is their description of the incident. Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Broad Street at 8:17 PM Tuesday. Flames and sparks were coming out of the ground through grates. Because it was electrical in nature, firefighters used several dry chemical extinguishers to suppress the fire until the power was cut to the transformers. Once power was cut, more dry chemical extinguishers were used to fully extinguish the fire. Then water was used to cool everything down so that EPB could assess the damage. As a result of this incident, power has been cut to a significant area around where this occurred. There's no other damage or injuries at this time.

Woman dies after being caught in Colorado River current in Grand Canyon, officials say

A 47-year-old woman on a commercial river trip in the Grand Canyon died on Saturday after getting caught in the current of the Colorado River, officials said. Sheetal Patel, who lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but was originally from Chicago, had hiked into the canyon to meet the river trip at Phantom Ranch for the start of a multi-day boating trip, according to a statement from the National Parks Service.

Woman dies after falling into Colorado River at Grand Canyon

A Tennessee woman has died after falling into the water in Grand Canyon National Park and getting caught by the Colorado River's swift current, authorities said Monday. Park officials said 47-year-old Sheetal Patel was cooling off Saturday afternoon along Pipe Creek Beach when the accident occurred. Commercial guides were able to reach the woman by boat and tried to revive her. Rangers were flown into the location by a park helicopter and Patel was pronounced dead. According to park officials, Patel had hiked into the Grand Canyon to meet a multi-day commercial boating trip from Phantom Ranch. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.The Park Service says in an advisory that it "does not recommend hiking from the rim to the river and back in one day."It wasn't clear when Patel had hiked down.The Park Service says she was living in Chattanooga but was originally from Chicago.
